William E. "Pete" Cage Sr., 85 of Hendersonville, passed away on Thursday, February 7th, 2019. Preceded in death by his parents, Nathan Thomas & Erin Cage, son, William "Bill" E. Cage Jr., sister, Valerie Shivers and brothers, Tom Cage and Nathan Thomas Cage Jr. Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Margaret Anne Beasley Cage, children, Miriam Anne "Mimi" Cage Stinson (Kevin), Margaret Cage Childers (Brad), grandchildren, Nathan Robert Stinson, Miriam Elizabeth Stinson, Margaret Grace Childers, Charles Bradford Childers Jr., Annie Cage Childers and William Thomas Childers, brother, Willie Cage, and sister, Cindy Carter. Pete is also survived by many other extended family and friends.
Pete, a lifelong resident of Hendersonville, was born in Rock Castle and died less than two miles away on Cherokee Road. He was valedictorian of Hendersonville High School as well as quarterback and captain of the football team. He was president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and was a role model for many even as a teenager.
He paid his own way to Vanderbilt and hitchhiked every day to class in Nashville. After graduating from Vanderbilt with a degree in mechanical engineering, he served in the army for two years at a missile testing facility in New Mexico. Then he went to work for Brown Engineering in Huntsville working on the Saturn 5 rocket with Werner Von Braun as NASA prepared to land a man on the moon.
But he soon returned home and took a position with Dupont and began his 40 year career at the Old Hickory facility.
He met his wife, Margaret Anne, in the Dupont cafeteria and was married to her for 57 years. They had three children and six grandchildren.
Throughout his entire life, he continued to be a role model for his family, friends and everyone who knew him.
A Celebration of Life service for Pete will be held at Hendersonville First United Methodist Church, 217 E Main Street in Hendersonville on Sunday, February 10th at 2:30pm, followed by burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Franklin, TN. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Saturday from 2:00pm-4:00pm and again on Sunday beginning at 1:00PM until the hour of the funeral service.
Pallbearers will be his nephews and neighbors, Jim Beasley, Michael Thomas, Robin Beasley, Josh Beasley, Chris Scherba and Pat Bradshaw.
Honorary Pallbearers will include, Clem Reese, Shelley Edwards and Don Dixon.
