Shirley Johanson Armstrong, USMC, 97, of Hendersonville, TN passed away peacefully on February 10, 2018. Prior to moving to Hendersonville she and her husband lived in Jericho, NY and Brick, NJ.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Warren Benson Armstrong and Brian J. Horan, her son-in-law. She is survived by her sister, Marion Rapp of Utica NY, three daughters; Judith Horan Westerhouse (Bud), Linda Flood (Charles) and Laurel Armstrong, grandchildren; Brendan Armstrong Horan, Rebecca Pelham, Meghan Horan Tomes, and Courtney Rose, ten great-grandchildren; Lauren, Payton, Brian, Asher, Amelia, Logan, Finley, Olivia, Esther and Miles. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, she served the nation as one of America's earliest Women Marines in Philadelphia, PA during WW II. A professional secretary, Cpl. Johanson was assigned to the Philadelphia Naval Yard as a clerk typist in the Munitions Supply Department.

Shirley was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She and her husband enjoyed travel and family events. She relocated to Hendersonville in 2012, and lived independently with her numerous friends at the Hearth of Hendersonville. She enjoyed playing Mah Jongg, reading and knitting all of her adult life.

Visitation will take place at Hendersonville Funeral Home on Saturday, February 17th 2:00 - 6:00PM and on Sunday February 18th 2:00 - 3:00 PM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Hendersonville Funeral Home on, Sunday, February 18th at 3:00 PM, Rev. Dr. Michael Ripski will officiate. Her internment will take place at Quantico National Cemetery on a date to be determined by the family.
