JACOBS, Lt. Col. Ralph Roy Jake, USMC, Retired
One of "The Greatest Generation", Lt. Col. Jake Jacobs, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2012 at Skyline Campus, Alive Hospice. He was born October 20, 1921 in Los Angeles, CA. Jake enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1939. He was stationed from 1941 to 1945 in Iceland, New Zealand, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and was in Guadal Canal January 1944 for the invasion landings. He returned to the U.S. in 1945 and was stationed in Vietnam 1967 and 68, including TET Offensive in February 1968 and in Material Support of Khe Sahn Siege. He was awarded a Bronze Star with Combat "V". Lt. Col. Jacobs retired in Feb. 1972, receiving The Presidential Unit Citation. He was preceded in death by parents Sylvesta and Bonita Jacobs and older brother James A. Jacobs. Jake is survived by loving wife Mercedes "Dee" Moran Jacobs; daughter, Margaret Ann "Shorty" Rob Jamison, of Riverview, FL; son John Bryan "Jackie" Jacobs of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren: Erik, Stacey and Kelly Jamison, and Justin, Jason, and Jimmie Jacobs; two great grandchildren, Ellie Baker and Kasper Jacobs; brother-in-law J. R. "Dicky" Moran, Jr. and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by numerous friends and was celebrated by 90 of them at his 90th "surprise" birthday party October 2011 at Bluegrass Country Club. Friends will remember him for his contagious sense of humor and the smile that was always there. Jake was an avid golfer and a source of encouragement to new golfers at Bluegrass CC where he was a member for many years. He volunteered to help out in every charity golf event.
Lt. Col. Jacobs was cremated and there will be a visitation as celebration of his life for family and friends Wednesday, September 26th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Hendersonville Funeral Home. Interment will at a later date.
