Joanne was a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The oldest of eleven children, born in 1935 on Oct. 11, she was raised as a Roman Catholic. She attended Catholic Elementary and High School. She received her B.A. in Elementary Education and a minor in Music from Carlow University in Pittsburgh, PA. and her Master's degree in counseling from Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. She was one of six finalists for "Teacher of The Year" in 1985 for the State of Maryland.
Joanne entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baden, PA. in 1949 and remained in the order for 19 years. She left the convent in 1968 and moved to Laurel, MD. where she spent 29 years as a sixth grade teacher in Prince George's Public Schools. In 1971, she left the Roman Catholic Church to obey the Gospel, and was baptized for the remission of her sins by Dr. Paul Coffman at the Hyattsville Church of Christ in the State of Maryland. In 1997 she moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee to teach at Lipscomb University in the School of Education, but heart surgery prevented her from taking this position.
As a successful author, Joanne has written 3 books- "A Change of Habit", "From Nun to Priest", and "Biblical Answers to Catholic Questions" all published by the Gospel Advocate in Nashville, TN. She has also written numerous pamphlets, has made CD tapes, videos, and a DVD, telling of her conversion, and has been on several TV programs and the World Christian Broadcast recounting her life's story. She has also written several articles for the Christian Woman Magazine and was a former columnist for the Laurel Leader, a local newspaper in Laurel, Maryland where she resided for 30 years. She was active in community organizations; working on Capital Hill in Washington, D.C. for the Republican Party and remains dedicated to actively serving her community in Hendersonville, TN today.
Lectureships, Ladies Bible Classes, retreats, and inspiration days throughout the U.S., Canada, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Austria, South Africa, and the Far East have been blessed to have Joanne as a speaker. Joanne was also a local speaker on a local religious broadcast (WNAH) located in Nashville, TN. She presented a daily 15 minute program on women in the Bible and related the stories of their lives to the portrait we should represent as a Christian Woman in the 21st century.
Joanne currently resided in Hendersonville, Tennessee and attended the Nashville Road Church of Christ. Her 96 year old mother obeyed the Gospel at the age of 78, (was baptized scripturally) and lived with her for 10 years before going home to be with her dear Jesus on June 28, 2008.
Joanne is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Alexandra Howe; siblings, Jeanne, Raymond,Jr., Regis, and Richard.
She is survived by her siblings, Geraldine Racculia of Ocala, FL; Edith Alexandria of Phoenix, AZ; Henrietta Henkel (Roy) of Lawrenceburg, TN; Marcia Calabrese of Murraysville, PA; Rose Marie Roman (Vernon) of Mukwonago, WI; Ramona Julian (Thomas) of Pittsburg, PA; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and many friends who were like family. We love you dearly and will miss you!
A celebration of Joanne's life will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 1pm at Hendersonville Funeral Home. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10am-1pm at Hendersonville Funeral Home 353 E Main St Hendersonville, TN 37075 (615) 824-3855 hendersonvillefh.com
