Joan Hollingsworth

August 8, 1934 — January 4, 2021

Born in New York City, New York on August 8, 1934 Departed on January 4, 2021 and resided in Goodlettsville, Tennessee

Joan Marie Hollingsworth of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, loving mother of three, passed away at the NHC Sumner Place on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021.

Raised in Oyster Bay, a hamlet in Long Island, New York, Joan was born on Aug. 8, 1934, to Howard Aldrich Rumpf and Monica Louise Snider Rumpf. An avid animal lover, she spent her younger years with her father and sister showing their prized Dachshunds throughout the Northeast. She frequently shared her stories about the odd assortment of animals that she and her sister had at their home on Split Rock Lane.

Joan attended high school at Our Lady of Mercy and later continued her education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in English. At UNC-CH, she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and would eventually meet her husband John William "Bill" Hollingsworth. They were married in 1956, the same year Joan graduated, and settled in the Annapolis area to raise their three children Lisa, Bill and Lindsay.

After raising her children, Joan entered the real estate industry focused on new construction, helping to build communities and homes in Maryland, New Mexico and Virginia. She took great pride and pleasure in helping families build their dream homes from design to reality.

Joan, small in stature but not in spirit, was both sassy and classy. Long after the rules of attire of her youth had given way to more casual ensembles, Joan was steadfast in maintaining a coordinated outfit and her, "face on," before ever leaving the house.

While her attire conveyed formality, when it came to her 10 grandchildren, Joan was all exceptions. She'd lounge on the ground, sculpt with playdough and chauffeur her grandbabies in a pink Barbie car. True to the tenderness she felt for her children or grandchildren, in matters of discipline the first question she would ask would be, "Did anyone get hurt?" If not, she could forgive anything.

Joan was a giving woman both professionally and personally, and throughout her life supported the work of Kappa Kappa Gamma and in memory of her mother, the American Cancer Society.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband John Hollingsworth Sr. and son John Hollingsworth Jr. Joan is survived by her sister Monica Parente and husband John; two children, Lisa Canterbury and husband Robin, and Lindsay Hollingsworth; an overflow of grandchildren and now great-grandchildren; and her furry companion Fiona.

In the coming months, a private family ceremony will be held. The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
