Jean Tiller Barnette, age 85, of Gallatin, TN, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2019.

She was born November 9, 1933, in Richmond, VA, to the late Clifton Odell Tiller, Sr. and Helen Parsley Tiller. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Martin E. "Bill" Barnette; son-in-law, Nicolas Manuel Bazan; and her brother, Clifton O. Tiller, Jr.

Jean is survived by her children, Brenda Barnette Bazan, Cynthia Marie Barnette, and Stephen Elliott Barnette (Coni); grandchildren, Ashlee' Barnette Minchey (Chance), Nicolas Manuel Bazan, Jr., and Rachel Elise Bazan; and great-grandchildren, Ryder Elliott Ballou, Elise Monae Bazan, and River Ann Minchey. Survivors also include brother-in-law, Henry Wayne Barnette (Mary Lee); sisters-in-law, Kay Barnette Smith and Betty Barnette Richardson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean graduated from James Madison University in Virginia where she received her degree in education. She loved being a teacher and, over her 35-year career, taught at every level from elementary through high school and community college. Jean's passion for education was recognized by her peers by her invitation to join Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women educators, where she served in various roles, including President of the Sumner County chapter. Jean's family meant everything to her; she was a very supportive mother who encouraged her children and grandchildren through all stages of life and always put them first. In her "spare" time, Jean loved to read and play bridge. After she retired, Jean learned to play duplicate bridge, joined the Vanderbilt Duplicate Bridge Club and traveled throughout the state to compete in tournaments. Jean will always be remembered as the preeminent Southern Belle who loved to entertain and could quote The Amy Vanderbilt Complete Book of Etiquette. Jean was a member of Gallatin First United Methodist Church and the Republican Women's Event of Sumner County.
