Herman Hansen passed away peacefully on Saturday July 2, 2016, in Nashville, TN, at the age of 96. Born on January 1, 1920, in the town of Farsund, Norway, Herman was the 5th child of 7 to a farming family. At the age of 17, he joined the Merchant Marines of Norway. He served proudly with the Allies during WWII as a chef aboard a merchant marine vessel while exiled from his home country during the Nazi occupation.
Herman sailed the world for 13 years during this time, occasionally working in the US. After the war, he returned to Norway to attend business school, and eventually moved to the US at the age of 30. He opened a restaurant in Bethel, CT but heard Miami was the place to be . In Miami, he met his wife, Evelyn, at the World Famous Hoffbrau House where she was a waitress and he was the new Chef. She always said she fell in love with his Norwegian accent. Within 6 months they married and enjoyed a full life of nearly 60 years until she passed away in May 2011 at the age of 94. They had two children, Lars and Karen.
Herman was a successful Restaurant Manager for many years in South Florida where he was most remembered for his success at the well-known "Wolfies Restaurant" on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach.
Herman is remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather; a passionate and creative chef, and a tremendous story teller. His pastimes included oil painting, carpentry, playing cards, travel, and his daily happy hour - his "favorite pass-time".
He is survived by his daughter, Karen; his grandchildren, Ryan (and Tierra), Christine (and Jordi), Evan, and Emily; and his great-grandchildren, Josiah and Milani. Herman was predeceased by his son, Lars, and his wife, Evelyn.
