Helen Andrews
September 18, 1931 — August 9, 2016
Mrs. Andrews was relieved of her earthly sufferings and entered in the Lord's embrace peacefully on August 9, 2016 at the age of 84.
Helen will live on in our memories as a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who never took herself too seriously. She loved to laugh and have a good time when gathering with those she loved most and "her laughter could be heard at all times." It could even be said that her laughter "lifted others around her." Connie and Vicki recall, "mom and daddy would play jokes on everyone!" Her laughter wasn't the only thing which was contagious; in fact, her love manifested itself vividly to all who knew her. Her family and friends will cherish all of the love Helen showered upon them over the course of her life.
The sounds of country and gospel music spoke deepest to Helen's soul. Interestingly, in more recent years, she worked part-time at the Ryman Auditorium where she had the opportunity to meet several country stars. She also enjoyed dancing with her husband J. B., who she lovingly referred to as "Jail Bird." They had a habit of dancing their Saturday nights away at the Smyrna Country Club where they were members. Each New Year's Eve, Helen and J. B. brought in the new year by attending a party and dancing together. While raising their children, Helen was a homemaker and sacrificed much as she lovingly cared for her home and family. However, she was responsible for creating countless memories which will live on forever in us.
"Every summer growing up, mom and daddy would take us on vacation to Panama City, FL, and, at that time, our trip was made in a car without air conditioning." Many fun times were had at family gatherings and on vacations. Christmas and Thanksgiving were always spent in Macon County, TN where a crowd of family would converge and have fellowship. Holidays were a special time. For about twelve years, Helen and her daughters made an annual trip each spring to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge where they enjoyed shopping, dining out, people watching, and the occasional cocktail hour. The cocktail hour was held in their hotel room and they tried on clothes purchased during their earlier outing over a glass of wine. After Helen's husband J. B. retired, they made Florida their home during the month of September. Septembers spent in Florida were sacred; Helen even took time off from the work she loved at the Ryman Auditorium to devote time to her husband and friends.
Helen enjoyed a beautiful relationship with her Lord and Savior. In fact, her devotion to the Lord is evident in her attendance at McFerrin Missionary Baptist Church every Sunday for sixty-plus years. She took great care in ensuring her family was dressed to the nines for their Sunday encounter in the Lord's House. Her family brought her a great deal of pride and joy, but her life as a child of God was the first priority. We will miss you dearly, but we know where you are.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hollis and Hazel Jenkins; one brother; and one sister. Helen leaves behind her faithful and loving husband of sixty-six years, J. B. Andrews; daughters, Connie (Gary) Hawkins, Vicki (Dale) Richmond; grandsons, Chase (Ashley) Kowalski, Chad (Lindsay) Kowalski, Troy (Amy) Conyer; six great-grandchildren; one sister; and many treasured friends.
The family will receive visitors Thursday, August 11 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. and again on Friday, August 12 from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. A Celebration of Helen's Life will be held on Friday, August 12 at 11 a.m. with Brother Kenneth Massey officiating.
