George Edward Philyaw passed away peacefully on February 25th, 2023 at the age of 93 with his family by his side. Born June 27th, 1929 in Live Oak, FL, he attended Berry High school where he was in the choir and worked hard on the school’s dairy farm. George served his country in the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. He received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University and began his Defense/Aerospace career in Titusville, Florida. While there, he earned his Pilot’s License, became a Certified Scuba Diver, and served as President of the Kiwanis Club. In 1972 he and his family moved to Huntsville, Alabama where they lived until 2014, working for United Technologies, Summa Technology, and General Dynamics. George remained involved in his community both personally and professionally, including serving as President of The National Space Club, President of Huntsville Amateur Hockey Association for 3 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Pamela Philyaw, sister Marjorie Wright and brothers Carlton and James Philyaw. He is survived by his son Greg Philyaw (Susan), daughter Elisa Alexander (Eddie), and grandchildren Evan Alexander, Emily Alexander, Nikolas Philyaw, Alexandra Philyaw, Sisters Peggy Embry, Sarah Jaeger (Don), Sister-in-Law Patsy Philyaw, Brother-in-Laws Willi & Mike Huxford, and numerous nieces, nephews, grands, and greats.
The family will hold a private celebration of his life in Florida at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hendersonville Performing Arts Company.
