Age 77 of Hendersonville, TN passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on the afternoon of January 16, 2016.
Gene was a life-long writer whose talents graced the pages of such publications as the Paducah Sun Democrat and the Nashville Banner. Gene also worked for the Metro County Court Clerk and taught defensive driving techniques at traffic school. Later in life, he volunteered his talents as editor of Legacy Magazine which he compiled for First Baptist Church Hendersonville. In recent years, his chosen outlet was Facebook, where he often connected with friends and family. He even participated regularly in "the gathering" at Cracker Barrel with his Facebook Friends. When it came to sports, he was a loyal fan of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program. Although he didn't play basketball, he was an avid bowler and fairly competitive too.
In fact, he was known to bowl on television and even collected winnings from his talent. Throughout the course of his bowling career he managed to bowl five perfect "300" games! Gene very much enjoyed singing in the choir at church and loved listening to southern gospel as well as country music. He had a taste for the most beautiful of all music and admired the best voices from various genres. Gene will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, kindness, love, and gratefulness. The family recalls what a tremendous blessing his last days were in their lives, and Gene could even be quoted as saying "his illness has built bridges of reconciliation" which brought great healing and peace.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Reeve and Gracie Marshall. Gene leaves behind his son, Buddy (Jan) Baker; daughters, Paula (Buzz) Kingsbury, Joni (David) Knight, Toni (Jimmy) Phillips, Tammy (Steve) Miller; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; sister, Shelia Marshall; brothers, Mike Marshall, Rick (Heather) Marshall.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gene's honor to the National Foundation for Cancer Research at https://secure.nfcr.org/page/contribute/general-donation. Please be sure to add Mr. Baker's name in the comment area.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. with service to follow. All will be held at the funeral home. HENDERSONVILLE FUNERAL HOME, 353 E. Main Street, Hendersonville, TN 37075 hendersonvillefh.com (615) 824-3855
