Dr. Jacqueline T. Hunter,-age 83, of Hendersonville, passed away peacefully Friday January 9th, 2015 at her home. Born in Durham, NC on October 29th, 1931 to the late Leo & Alease "Chippy" Ruffin Townsend. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hunter, Sr. and brothers, Leo and Howard Townsend.
After finishing high school, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree at North Carolina Central University and finished up in 1985 at The University of Southern Mississippi with her PhD. Jacqueline was a professor of Biology where she taught at Tennessee State University, Fisk University and finished her career at Xavier University in New Orleans, LA after 34 years of teaching. Dr. Jacqueline T. Hunter had many achievements in her lifetime, but one of the biggest was the SOAR premed program that she helped author with other colleagues at Xavier University while teaching in this program. It made Xavier a leader nationally in placing African-American students into medical school.
She is survived by daughter, Micki Hunter; son; Harold Hunter, Jr. and wife Tania; 3 grandchildren, Devyn G. Hunter, Julian D. Hunter, Carianna R. Hunter, brothers, Alan & Luther Townsend; sister Flora Pittman; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and a host of close friends.
A Life Celebration will be held Saturday, January 17 at 2:00pm at Hendersonville Funeral Home with burial to follow at Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
