Dr. Robert James Dean, 84, left this world to be with the Lord on July 13, 2017 after a long illness. He is survived by, sister, Judith Dean of Raleigh, NC; sons, David Dean (Gail) of Laurel, MD, Daniel Dean (Rebecca) of Huntsville, AL, Thomas Dean (Jeanie) of Gallatin, TN; daughter, Ann Richardson (Tony) of Madison, TN; granddaughter, Nichole Dean, of Milwaukee, WI; grandson, Travis Dean of Laurel, MD; granddaughter, Christina Hearne (John) of Huntsville, AL; granddaughter, Rachael Renfro (Jack) of Johnson City, TN; grandson, Samuel Dean (Kasey) of Gallatin, TN; grandson, Nathan Dean (Robin) of Hendersonville, TN; grandson, Thomas Mark Dean (Angel) of Gallatin, TN; grandson, Jacob Dean, attending Auburn University in AL; sister-in-law, Jeanette Dean, and numerous nieces and nephews. His beloved wife of 60 years, Betty Edwards Dean, preceded him by six years.

As a boy, Bob's family lived in Nashville, and he graduated from Isaac Litton High School. Bob attended college at Tennessee Tech and Carson Newman Colleges, receiving a B.S. in History in 1954, before moving to New Orleans to study at the Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded a B. D. degree in 1957 and a Th. D in 1961. Bob was ordained as a minister in 1953 and pastored Victory Chapel mission in New Orleans plus First Baptist Church in Savannah, TN and Hillcrest Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, KY before joining the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board in 1968. After that last move in 1968, Bob and Betty lived in Hendersonville, TN. As a full-time employee and later, after retirement, Bob wrote numerous Bible study lessons and articles through the Sunday School Board, and he authored four books published through Broadman Press: First Corinthians for Today, How Can We Believe?, Philippians - Life at Its Best, and God's Big Little Words. He also found time to preach and teach at his and Betty's church homes in Hendersonville (First Baptist and later Long Hollow Baptist) and occasionally at out-of-town locations. Bob always enjoyed studying and teaching the New Testament.

Bob enjoyed golf, fishing, reading, and ice cream. He was a husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, pastor, author, mentor, and friend who will be greatly missed.

A Life Celebration service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Long Hollow Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 19, 2017. Visitation will be held at Long Hollow Baptist Church in the chapel on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Private Interment will be held at Hendersonville Memory Gardens. Pastor Roger Elliott and Dr. Ross McLaren will be officiating the Life Celebration and the private graveside service.
