Dr. Cahalan

July 5, 1945 — June 1, 2016

Born in Fort Wayne, IN on July 5, 1945 Departed on June 1, 2016 and resided in Hendersonville, TN

Age 70, of Hendersonville, TN, passed away after a lengthy illness on June 1, 2016.

Dr. Cahalan was fluent in seven languages and had a gift of communicating with others. His fluency in foreign languages stems from his years of study at a private boarding school in Europe. Travelling back and forth from his native United States to Europe for his studies he regularly embarked on a three-week-long cruise across the Atlantic. Prior to entering into his undergraduate studies he broke previous records when he sat for his entrance examinations. When recalling his legacy it could easily be said that he had a keen intellect, a thirst for knowledge, and a tremendous work ethic; however, he manifested a kind and gentle spirit to all he encountered.

James enjoyed the companionship of cats and dogs, and birdwatching was a favorite pastime. He also enjoyed drifting through the notes of many classical pieces of music. James had an insatiable appetite and a vast knowledge of history. Collecting books was another hobby of his, and occasionally he would acquire some rarities. He collected many works relating to the founding and subsequent growth of Unitarianism, many of which he donated to Harvard University's Unitarian Collection. James' final expedition was a pilgrimage to the Unitarian Universalists Headquarters in Boston, MA.

He was an avid bridge player and often played in tournaments. The Vanderbilt Bridge Center was his regular venue for card play. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; however, he leaves behind his loving wife of 12 years, Dr. Barbara O'Conner Cahalan; stepson, Rigel Humphrey; sister, Nancy Green; three nieces; brother-in-law, Mike O'Conner; sister-in-law, Anne O'Conner; two dogs; and one cat.
