David W. Wingfield

September 25, 1949 — February 19, 2025

Hendersonville

David Wayne Wingfield, age 75, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025, at 11:11 p.m. surrounded by his loving family.

Known for his big smile, gentle spirit, sense of humor, humility and generosity, he leaves behind his family as well as many friends and business colleagues who will miss him dearly.

David was born in Nashville, Tennessee on September 25, 1949, to Cecil Gilbert and Nina Carolyn Wood Wingfield. He grew up attending Jackson Park Church of Christ, was involved in Boy Scouts, enjoyed music and playing guitar, and riding his motorcycle.

David attended Stratford High School in Inglewood and while in high school, David met his bride to be, Joyce Ann McKinnon, at The Lazy Susan Restaurant in Madison, Tennessee where they both worked.

At the young age of 17 years old, David enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country and married his high school sweetheart, Joyce, on July 12, 1967. They started married life in Fairbanks, Alaska where David was in the Army Artillery Unit. In 1969, while stationed in Tacoma, Washington, he and Joyce had their first daughter, Cherie. Upon discharge from the Army, David and Joyce, moved home to Nashville and added another daughter, Charity, and a son, Chad, to their family.

David worked for and eventually owned and was the President of Ceildeck Corporation, a Commercial Acoustical Ceiling and Flooring Subcontractor established in 1956.

He began at Ceildeck Corporation in 1970 as a Field Mechanic and  was later known, as the “BEST” Field Mechanic in the industry.

Over the years, he transitioned from working in the field to working in the office as an Estimator. This came naturally to him as he had so much experience in the field and a great understanding of the business.

In 1997, David and his partner, James Shelpman purchased Ceildeck Corporation and became the sole owners. As President and Owner of Ceildeck, David was proud to have worked on many well-known projects, a few being, the Tennessee Titans Stadium, the Dave Ramsey Headquarters and a three-year renovation project for HCA Corporate Offices.

As project manager for the HCA Corporate Offices renovation, Ceildeck Corporation and David received the Gold Award in Construction Excellence given, by CISCA (Ceiling & Interior Systems Construction Association) in 2016.

Some may not have thought of the Construction Industry as a “Creative Industry” or thought of David as a “Creative” especially in the early years when he was physically installing ceiling grid and tiles, using the kicker to stretch carpet, prepping a floor for laminate, tile or wood, risking his life by walking around on stilts or being hundreds of feet up in the air on scaffolding. But the fact is, David was a “creative.” He practiced his creativity everyday with the exquisite commercial designs that he would execute. He loved being creative and working with his hands whether it was playing guitar, beekeeping and making his own honey, “C&C” Honey, with his father; planting and harvesting a garden; catching and mounting gorgeous butterflies; or spending hours woodworking or doing renovation projects on his own home. There was nothing that he could not do. No matter how difficult the task at hand might be, he would figure it out and execute it perfectly.

David also enjoyed and passed on the gift of creativity to his children and grandchildren by way of “Oral History.” David loved to tell stories to his children and grandchildren of his childhood and young adulthood. These stories were always very descriptive and thorough, and you always were able to visualize the story…especially the stories about family. They were always interesting, and you never tired of hearing them.

David also liked to have fun. He was the practical joker extraordinaire. He was really good at it and his family and co-workers were his victims. His practical jokes were never malicious but were funny, creative, and oh so clever!

There were many things David “loved.” He loved God. He loved his family. He loved music. He loved to laugh. He loved to have fun. He loved to work hard. He loved to play hard. He loved Center Hill Lake. He loved to water ski. He loved to fish. He loved to tell stories of the past. He loved Nanny’s birthday cake. He loved to smile. He loved his wife. He loved his children. He loved his grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family. He loved his friends and business colleagues. He loved life.

David is preceded in death by his loving son, David Chadwick Wingfield (Chad); his loving wife of 53 years, Joyce McKinnon Wingfield; his parents, Cecil and Nina Wingfield; and his father and mother-in-law, Billy and Margaret McKinnon.

He is survived by daughters, Cherie Wingfield Smith (Marc) and Charity Wingfield Hicks (Chris); adoring grandchildren, Anna and Lilly Smith and Colby and Caroline Hicks, brothers, Woody Wingfield and Paul Wingfield (Lisa); brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Brad and Lisa Tyler, as well as nieces, nephews, great nephews and extended family.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to the entire staff at NHC Place at the Trace and Select Specialty Hospital – Nashville West for their extraordinary care and friendship.
