Daniel Mendoza, MD, 89, of Hendersonville, passed away Friday, May 5, 2017 at Hendersonville Medical Center. Born March 27, 1928 in Michoacan, Mexico, Dr. Mendoza was educated in military school and later attended medical school in Mexico City where he was president of the student body and class valedictorian. He first came to the United States under a government exchange visitor program. Dr. Mendoza then completed a rotating residency at (former) Nashville General Hospital and Wilmington, Delaware. He then specialized in Pediatrics at General Hospital and Vanderbilt Medical Center. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Carolyn (Legg) Mendoza, who was a nursing student at the time. They married in 1959 in Lawrenceburg, TN and he became a US citizen in the mid 1960's. Dr. Mendoza worked as a pediatrician on staff at Madison Hospital, Memorial Hospital and Hendersonville Hospital. He later opened his own practice in Hendersonville where he developed a large and loving practice following. Dr. Mendoza specialized in childhood diseases and through his continuous study and education he was known as a leading diagnostician. In addition to his medical practice he was also a store and restaurant owner. He also had an interest in landscape architecture and enjoyed building rock walls and creating garden features. Dr. Mendoza came from humble roots as the son of a coconut and banana farmer in Mexico. His passion for education and desire to study lead him to the path of medicine which he has fostered in his family. He was also a member of Hendersonville First Baptist Church. Dr. Mendoza was preceded in death by his parents Jose Mendoza and Petra Cervantes. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Mendoza; his children, Tammy and Daniel Bryant of Dallas, TX, Dr. Daniel and Jill Renee Mendoza of Nashville, Dr. Mark Mendoza of Louisville, KY, and Dr. Gina Mendoza and Daniel Tidcomb of Hendersonville; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Alisa, Gabriel, Noah, Sophia, Dashiel and Anika; and his siblings, Jesus, Joel, Sophia and Delia. Visitation will be held at Hendersonville Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 10th from 4 to 8 pm and at the Hendersonville First Baptist Church on Thursday, May 11th from noon to 2 pm. A celebration of life service will be held at the church at 2 pm, Thursday followed by interment at Hendersonville Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospitals www.shrinershospitals.org or to St Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org
