Charles Land

Charles Robinett Land, age 94, of Hendersonville, TN passed away October 5, 2016 surrounded by his loving wife of 66 years, children, and grandchildren.
When recalling Charles' legacy many words come to mind; specifically, loving, supportive, honest, and faithful. He was a hard-working man of integrity and steadfast morals whose strength and tenacity were unparalleled. Perhaps his strength was learned from growing up on and working on a farm. Even his handshake could bring a grown man to tears.
Priorities were always in proper order with God first and family second and everything else after the first two. Being a family-oriented man he and his wife, Ann took great care to truly form their children into the men and women they are today. The life which Charles lived was itself an example for all husbands and fathers. Fond family memories include annual family reunions and camping trips to Pickett State Park. The great outdoors was the usual venue for family vacations filled with hiking, fishing, and eating of course.
Charles had a sweet tooth and especially enjoyed homemade ice cream. His list of good eats includes; every home cooked meal Ann prepared, steak, and peel and eat shrimp which he'd always have Ann peel for him. He had fairly simple tastes but excellent ones.
In his spare time, Charles was a UT sports fanatic who enjoyed cheering on the Volunteers. He also enjoyed playing cards and liked to win. Additionally, he and Ann were members of the Barn Lofter's Square Dancing Club where they danced their hearts out and met many wonderful friends over the years.
A proud veteran of World War II, Charles enjoyed sharing tales of his Naval service. He was stationed in Maui, Hawaii, where he prepared airplanes for combat. As a Mason he took pride in his involvement in a fraternal order of brothers with whom he would fellowship and better the local community.
A home builder by trade, Charles was a gifted carpenter who constructed custom homes in Inglewood, Madison, and Hendersonville for decades. It is amazing to think about how many folks found a dwelling in one of his homes. In fact, he built every home in which his family resided with the exception of the most recent. His son, David recalls, "he even built us three treehouses!" He was an intelligent man who owned and operated his own businesses, and prior to launching his career he earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Tennessee Technological University.
An active member of First Baptist Church Hendersonville, he instilled the Sunday routine of churchgoing in his household. According to his wife, Ann, "there was never even a question about what we were doing on Sundays." Attending church services as a family was simply a part of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas David and Myra "Annie" Land; and siblings, Calvin and Thomas Land. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Miller Land; children, Patricia (Bobby) Tucker, David Land, Margaret (Jeff) Puccini, and Dudley (Christine) Land; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Frances (Jimmy) Jones, and J. Dudley Land.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 7, 2016 from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. at Hendersonville Funeral Home, 353 E. Main Street, Hendersonville, TN 37075 hendersonvillefh.com 615-824-3855. Service will be held Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11 a.m. with an hour of visitation prior to service at First Baptist Church Hendersonville, 106 Bluegrass Commons Blvd., Hendersonville, TN 37075. Bruce Chesser and Richard Gaia will be officiating. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers with Bob Davis' SS as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles' memory to First Baptist's "Backpack Ministry."
